Interview with Ramli Ibrahim in Times of India

No one who watched Ramli Ibrahim’s fluid movements trace the Dasa Mahavidyas doubted that the Malaysian Odissi exponent has transcended national, religious and ethnic boundaries. The dynamic artiste trained in western ballet, modern dance, Malay martial arts and Bharatanatyam before absorbing Guru Debaprasad Dass Odissi. Packages are arriving

maskphotoArtists, props, instruments, costumes… the plethora of material necessary for a classical Indian dance show is slowly arriving on Australian shores.

Alex Dea has arrived with his reba, a traditional Indonesian instrument, and is in daily rehearsals with Bala on tabla/mridangam and Aruna on Carnatic vocals. During his time in Sydney, Alex is staying with Anandavalli at the Lingalayam HQ, affectionately known as the Elephant House – due to the Ganapati sculpture peering out onto suburbia from the upper balcony.

Guna from Sutra Dance Theatre in Malaysia has arrived and is working with Anandavalli on elements of the dance. The rest of the Malaysian crew will arrive on Monday morning and then everyone goes into intense rehearsals. They too will be staying at the Elephant House, rehearsing, eating and sleeping in the same abode.

As Anandavalli would put it, the whole ‘jing bang’ will be here!
